The season finale of ‘Lost:’ were you satisfied? Mystified? Both?

Ever since the producers of “Lost” set an end date for the series in 2010, the drama has been moving at a breakneck speed — and the fourth season’s finale was no exception. Were you left confused by the season finale and the revelation of who was in the coffin? I know I was. Spoiler-phobes, beware!

And if you haven’t seen the episodes yet, watch them streaming online here on CTV.ca.

I was confused that the “man in the coffin” moment became the finale cliffhanger, when so many bigger events already happened during the episode. I was also a little disappointed that it turned into a “Ben emerges from the shadows with instructions” scene that has already occurred so many times this season.

Sure, no one predicted that Locke would be “Jeremy Bentham,” but now that he’s been unmasked, it lays out too much of where the next season will go. As Locke becomes leader of the Others, he changes his name and, at some point, is killed by Widmore’s people off the island.

The real climax of the episode was Ben’s descent into the mysterious cavern below the Orchid Station, where he took hold of an ancient-looking crank coated with ice. That scene, more than the casket revelation, is the one that will have fans arguing until next season about what it means, and what happens next.

As for the rest of the finale, I wasn’t all-out shocked — Michael’s death in the explosion on the freighter had already been foreshadowed earlier in the season, as well as Jin’s apparent death in the blast.

However, it was interesting to find out the Oceanic Six (plus Desmond and Frank) were rescued by Penny in her own ship — but the emotional reunion of Desmond and Penny wasn’t nearly as powerful as their epic mid-season phone call. I still get chills thinking about that scene.

Overall, the finale did a good job of wrapping of the drama of “How did they get off the island” with “What happened when they returned home,” and it looks like next season will likely mix “What happened on the island after it moved?” and “What will Jack do to convince the Six to return to the island?”
